Trauma Insurance to Support You Through Serious Illness or Injury

What is trauma insurance?

Trauma insurance provides a lump sum payment if you are diagnosed with a serious medical condition listed in your policy. Unlike health insurance, the benefit can be used as needed, whether for medical expenses, mortgage repayments, everyday living costs while you are off work, or rehabilitation support.

Commonly covered conditions include cancer, heart attack, stroke and major heart surgery. Some policies may also extend to other serious illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or major organ failure.

A sudden diagnosis can place significant financial pressure on you and your family at an already difficult time. Having trauma cover in place provides access to immediate funds, helping maintain financial stability while you focus on treatment, recovery and supporting those around you.

How our process works

1. Discovery

We assess your personal circumstances, financial commitments and medical history to determine appropriate benefit levels. This includes identifying considerations that may affect premiums, exclusions or policy structure.

2. Strategy & implementation

We explain your trauma insurance options clearly and recommend a policy that suits your needs. We handle the application process from start to finish and keep you updated throughout.

3. Ongoing review & support

As your circumstances change, we review your cover to ensure it remains appropriate. If you need to make a claim, we guide you through the process and communicate with the insurer on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Explore answers to some common questions about trauma insurance.

Trauma insurance provides a lump sum payment if you’re diagnosed with a specified serious illness or medical condition, such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke. The payment can be used however you choose, including medical costs, time off work, rehabilitation, or everyday expenses, helping reduce financial stress while you focus on recovery.

Trauma insurance pays a one-off lump sum when a covered medical condition occurs, regardless of whether you’re able to work. Income protection insurance provides ongoing monthly payments if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury. Both serve different purposes and can work together as part of a broader protection strategy.

Health insurance helps cover medical treatment and hospital costs, but it doesn’t replace lost income or cover everyday expenses. Trauma insurance provides a lump sum that can be used for any purpose, such as mortgage repayments or recovery support. Having both can provide more complete financial protection during serious illness.

The amount of trauma cover you need depends on your personal circumstances. Factors include your income, debts, living expenses, family responsibilities, and how long you may be off work. The goal is to provide enough financial support to reduce stress and maintain stability while you recover from a serious medical event.

Trauma insurance is generally held outside of superannuation, as super rules limit how benefits can be paid. In some cases, certain policies may be structured through super, but this can add complexity. We can help assess whether holding trauma cover inside or outside super is appropriate for your situation.

Once your trauma insurance is in place, changes to your health usually won’t affect your existing cover. However, life changes such as income increases, new debts, or family changes may mean your cover needs reviewing. Regular reviews help ensure your insurance remains appropriate and continues to meet your needs over time.
